There are few different ways and options to do this:

First, to delete one or more messages from a conversation:
  1. Launch WhatsApp, go to chat Window with the message you would like to delete
  2. Tap and hold message
  3. You can tap on more messages to select more than one to message to delete
  4. Choose 'Delete'' from the menu.

Next, how to delete individual or group chats
  1. Go the the main chats screen and long press on the chat you would like to delete
  2. Then select ''Delete chat'' or 'Delete and Exit Group'' from the menu.

Lastly, how to delete and clear your ENTIRE chat history
  1. Go to WhatsApp --> Settings --> Chat Settings
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap ''Delete all conversations'' or ''Clear all conversations'
  3. ''Delete all conversations'' will delete all your convos and the messages inside of them
  4. ''Clear...'' will delete all messages and leave the conversatinos in the Chats list.

Thanks.... And michel no it would remove you from the group until you use the press and hold long method. That would ask you to exit the group. But that mains setting menu option for deleting conversations wouldn't remove you from the group.

Deleting messages is very easy as we have seen here, but I would like to suggest everyone to have backup every now & then just for safe side.

The above post is exactly what you to do but remember one thing, to delete a particular chat or message, you can do it with single click but in order to delete the group you have to exit it first & then delete it.

The procedure of removing WhatsApp conversations from an Android phone selectively is very simple and you can follow the below steps.

  1. Turn on your Android phone, such as Samsung Galaxy S9/S8, and open the WhatsApp app.
  2. Go to "CHATS" tab and choose a contact.
  3. Select a message that you want to delete and long tap on it. Then, you will find the recycle bin appears on the top.
  4. Tap on the recycle bin and click on "DELETE" option on the pop-up dialog.

You can also delete a conversation from your messages inbox:
Go to your messages inbox by clicking Messenger in the top left of Facebook.
Open the conversation you want to delete.
Click in the top right and click Delete.

If deleted messages can still be recovered?
I'm thinking if I can recover my messages if I do not have access to the WhatsApp account.
